Know the stages
- Rear-facing: infants and toddlers, as long as the seat allows
– Forward-facing with harness: once they outgrow rear-facing limits
– Booster: once they outgrow the harness
– Seat belt alone: when the belt fits without a booster, often around ages 8 to 12
Fit the car and the installer
The safest seat is one installed correctly. Try LATCH and seat-belt installs, check the recline indicator, and make sure the seat moves less than 1 inch at the belt path. A free check with a certified Child Passenger Safety Technician is worth booking.
Register it and watch for recalls
Mail the registration card or register online the day you open the box. NHTSA lists car seat recalls at nhtsa.gov, and you can search by brand and model.
Check the expiration date
Plastics and parts age. Every seat has an expiration or “do not use after” date on a label or molded into the shell, often 6 to 10 years from manufacture.
Never buy used
A used seat may have been in a crash, be missing parts or labels, or be under recall. NHTSA advises replacing seats after a moderate or severe crash, so a bargain seat is not worth the unknowns.

Frequently asked questions
Which car seat is the safest?
Every seat sold in the US meets FMVSS 213. The safest choice is the one that fits your child and car and that you install correctly every time.
When can my child face forward?
The AAP advises keeping kids rear-facing as long as possible, until they reach the highest weight or height their seat allows.
Can I use a seat after a minor fender-bender?
NHTSA lists criteria for minor crashes where a seat may not need replacing. Check your seat’s manual too; some makers say to replace after any crash.
